The details
We are partnered with a PLC manufacturing business to assist them in their search for a commercially sharp Commodity Manager to take ownership of category strategy across capital expenditure, transport, and packaging spend. This is a strategic, multi-site role where you’ll shape sourcing decisions, manage high-value supplier relationships, and deliver measurable cost and performance improvements across our manufacturing operations.
You’ll work at the heart of the procurement function, balancing long-term strategic planning with hands-on commercial delivery. Operating across a complex, multi-site manufacturing environment, you’ll be the go-to commercial lead for stakeholders ranging from site operations teams to senior leadership. Key responsibilities include:
– Own category strategy – Develop and execute sourcing roadmaps, track commodity indices, and translate market intelligence into commercial advantage.
– Lead negotiations – Run complex commercial discussions covering pricing, payment terms, and contractual protections. Drive total cost of ownership, not just headline price.
– Manage suppliers strategically – Build relationships with key partners, implement structured performance management (quality, cost, delivery), and diversify the supply base to reduce risk.
– Strengthen resilience – Identify supply, financial, and operational risks; develop contingency plans; ensure continuity across all sites.
– Influence stakeholders – Act as the commercial lead across Operations, Finance, Engineering, and senior leadership. Challenge specifications and sourcing approaches where it adds value.
– Deliver results – Hit KPIs on cost savings, payment terms, supplier performance, and contract coverage. Report clearly on category health.
The successful applicant will have experience of the following:
– Proven commodity/category management experience in a manufacturing environment
– Strong track record in commercial negotiation and contract management
– Experience managing multi-site or regional spend portfolios
– Analytical mindset – comfortable interpreting cost drivers and market trends
– Ability to influence without authority in a matrix organisation
– Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems (IFS preferred)
– Willingness to travel extensively across UK sites, with occasional international travel
– Relevant degree or equivalent experience
This is a hands-on, high-impact role for someone who thrives on driving commercial outcomes, building supplier capability, and working closely with operational teams. You’ll have the autonomy to shape category strategy, the exposure to influence senior decision-makers, and the opportunity to deliver tangible results across a growing manufacturing business.
We’re committed to continuous improvement, colleague development, and creating a working environment where you can do your best work.
